FAQs

Getting Started

We’re fluent in several coding dialects here at Kamp Kode! For our microcontroller expeditions, we primarily use Python and MicroPython. We also venture into HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSON territories on some of our trails.

Great question, Kamper! We chose Python because it’s both beginner-friendly and a favorite among tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Netflix. It’s like the Swiss Army knife of coding – versatile and reliable. Plus, once you’ve mastered Python, other coding languages will feel like a walk in the park!

Not at all! Our Trailblazer Adventures are perfect for complete beginners. As you progress, some advanced expeditions might recommend prior experience, but you can always revisit past adventures to brush up on your skills.

Absolutely! Our adventures are designed for self-paced exploring. Some special expeditions might have sign-up windows, so check the adventure list for details.

For our Trailblazer starter adventures, the only requirement is curiosity! If any course has prerequisites, we’ll let you know before you set out.

Fear not, math-phobes! Most of our adventures use little to no complex math. When we do use formulas, we’ll explain them clearly and provide resources for further exploring. It’s more about common sense and logic than long division!

What to Expect

It depends on the trail. Most of our beginner Trailblazer expeditions last about 2-3 hours. We strive to keep each section of the trail manageable, with recommend breaks every 25-30 minutes to let your brain absorb all that new knowledge. And don’t forget to stay hydrated – coding is thirsty work!

You’ll need a host computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux), and we’ll guide you through setting up the necessary software (usually free and open-source). For hardware components, we provide gear lists with purchase links. Don’t worry, most components are reusable and budget-friendly!

We know that diving into coding can feel like venturing into uncharted territory, filled with badgers, bears or worse… boring content. That’s why we’ve packed our adventures with clear explanations, handy sidebars, and plenty of “Adventure Tips” along the way. Remember, coding is an adventure – we’re here to guide you, not to leave you lost in the digital wilderness!

Get ready for some exciting hands-on projects! We’re talking weather stations, air quality monitors, and other cool gadgets that’ll make you feel like a real tech ranger. Our projects are designed to be fun, useful, and great for citizen science. Not seeing something you like? Drop us a line and let us know what interests you!

For our Trailblazer courses, no soldering required! We’ll be using breadboards and jumper wires – think of it as building with high-tech LEGO. Some advanced adventures might include soldering, but we’ll give you a heads-up before you set out.

Absolutely! We love seeing families explore the coding wilderness together. It’s a great way to bond and learn new skills!

We’re all about exploring at your own pace, with clear explanations and engaging content. Our adventures are designed to be fun, not frustrating. If you ever feel overwhelmed, take a break and come back refreshed – the coding trail will still be here! If you need more information about Kamp Kode, just let us know below.

AI Tools: Our High-Tech Compass

At Kamp Kode, we use modern tools on our coding expeditions! AI assistants like MagicSchool, ChatGPT, Claude.ai and Dream by Wombo help us scout new trails and design fun challenges. (We do our best to catch any AI-generated “extra fingers” in our illustrations!)

Our AI Philosophy: AI is like a hammer… you can use it as a tool or a weapon. We prefer the tool approach. AI tools can be helpful in code development, particularly in offering solution options and translating from one coding language to another. We apply AI tools to augment experiences and open up new possibilities.
